Update: Undiluted Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine Can Be Refrigerated for a Month

Strict requirements for handling the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine initially limited which sites were able to offer it. Yet, those relaxed over time, with the latest guidance now allowing undiluted, thawed vaccine to be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month. Here are more details.

WASHINGTON, DC – New guidance that loosens up storage requirements for undiluted, thawed Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine should make the process easier for pharmacists and also make it possible for a broader range of sites – including physician offices – to offer the vaccine.

The Food and Drug Administration announced recently that, based on a review of recent data submitted by Pfizer Inc., it is authorizing undiluted, thawed vaccine to be stored in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (35°F to 46°F) for up to 1 month. Under previous guidance, thawed, undiluted vaccine vials only could be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
