Goal
The goal of this educational activity is to provide managed care, specialty, and hospital/health-system pharmacists with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in the management of ID and ID anemia in patients with heart failure.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After participating in this activity, learners will demonstrate the ability to:
- Explain the association between iron deficiency (ID) and heart failure (HF), including onset, clinical presentation, and criteria for diagnosis
- Identify challenges that hinder the diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment of ID in HF
- Discuss guideline recommendations for the use of intravenous (IV) iron therapy for patients with HF
- Analyze key research studies supporting the selection and dosing of IV iron therapy in patients with HF
- Formulate approaches for individualizing management of ID in HF, including dosage and administration strategies for IV iron therapy
