TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.

GOAL
The goal of this educational activity is to educate health care professionals about the issues associated with maintaining proper vigilance regarding pain medications, with emphasis on controlled substances for pain, and provide strategies for continued awareness of drug diversion.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the problem of undertreated and untreated pain in the United States;*
  2. List the Federation of State Medical Boards suggestions for the treatment of pain with opioids;*
  3. Describe the assessment of the risk of controlled substance diversion in the provision of opioids to treat pain;*
  4. List the factors that are predictive of aberrant drug-related behaviors by patients with pain;* and
  5. Describe the VIGIL process as a systematic method to manage drug diversion while treating pain with opioids.
