TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and physicians, including primary care physicians, rheumatologists, endocrinologists, OB/GYNs, and other practitioners involved in the management of patients with osteoporosis.

STATEMENT OF NEED/PROGRAM OVERVIEW

This program has been developed to educate clinicians on the epidemiology of osteoporosis, and provide strategies for its management, including the use of calcium and vitamin D supplementation in combination with other therapies.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After completing this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Review the signs, symptoms, risk factors, and diagnosis of osteoporosis;*
  2. Describe the issues that may result in increased morbidity and mortality in patients with osteoporosis;*
  3. Describe the non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches for the prevention and management of osteoporosis, with emphasis on the need for calcium and vitamin D supplementation in conjunction with bisphosphonate therapy;*
  4. List strategies for clinicians to make appropriate prevention/management recommendations, including patient education to educate and counsel patients
